DOHA: India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI) officially expanded to Qatar on Monday, marking a significant milestone in serving the large Indian expatriate community and travelers in the Gulf nation. Until now, UPI payments were accepted only at select duty-free shops at Doha’s Hamad International Airport.

With its formal rollout, the service is now available across retail outlets throughout Qatar. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the move’s benefits for the 830,000-strong Indian expatriate population, saying it will make transactions and remittances faster and more convenient.
